THE RUUM

From your first feature to global commercial opportunities

At The Ruum Africa (TRA), we are building a global home for African photography talent, and a living ecosystem that tells your story, validates your craft, and positions you for real commercial opportunities.

Ruum Spotlight is our flagship feature series and the entry point into everything we are building. If your work caught our attention, or if you found your way here on your own - this is where it begins.

Ruum Spotlight: Curated for More

When you join the 54Ruum community through Ruum Spotlight, you are entering a managed talent network designed to protect your work, position you for high-value commercial opportunities, and curate your best work for licensing and fine art prints.

Commercial Licensing (Select™)

Featured artists gain early access to Select™ - our high-fidelity, rights-managed licensing arm. This allows our team to include your premium, legally-cleared work in professional pitches to global agencies and partners.

Digital Commerce (RCM)

We are launching our e-commerce platform later this year, providing a continuous partnership for featured artists interested in print and merchandise sales.

Global Positioning (RTM)

Ruum Spotlight is the primary vetting process for RTM - our managed talent network that connects a vetted shortlist of creators with commercial projects globally.

Artist Protection

We respect your IP. We do not own your work. Our partnership is built on a licensing model where you retain full ownership while we position your assets for high-value commercial use - the 54Ruum platform is specifically engineered to prevent unauthorised direct downloads of your photos.

Your Story Depth

Beyond a great photo, buyers buy a compelling story. We publish in-depth stories on our website that represent you accurately to our network and to high-level buyers. Bring as much detail as you can to your answers. Our editors handle the polish, but your raw voice is what makes it real. If you can, please avoid AI - your original tone is the whole point.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does the feature process take from submission to publication?

The timeline varies depending on whether the submission followed our guidelines. On average, features are published within 2-3 weeks of submission - though some go live within a week.

What kind of photographers do you feature - any genre, or specific niches?

All photographers are welcome. We are building a diverse community and accept submissions from every genre and background.

Can I submit if I'm not a full-time photographer?

Absolutely. Many of the talented artists we have featured are not full-time or professional photographers. What matters is your work and your story.

Why is story depth so important?

Global partners don't just buy an image - they buy the person behind the lens. The more detail you provide about your niche and your technical process, the better we can represent your talent to a high-level buyer.

Is this open to photographers across all African countries?

Yes. Photographers from all 54 African countries are welcome - and you can be based anywhere in the world, as long as you are African.

How many artists are currently in the 54Ruum community?

We have over 1,000 artists across the community - including photographers, filmmakers, creative directors, and visual artists. Through the Ruum Spotlight series alone, we have featured over 200 artists from 34 countries.

Do I lose my rights by joining?

Absolutely not. You are the owner of your work. We act as your positioning and licensing partner, but the Intellectual Property remains yours.

Can I still sell my work on other platforms?

Yes. Unless a specific exclusive agreement is signed for a particular commercial project, you are free to manage your portfolio as you see fit. We are an additional high-value resource for your career, not a restriction.

How will I know when my work is being pitched to a commercial partner?

The feature form includes a consent section that you must complete before submitting your story and work. This gives us permission to pitch your work or file it under the appropriate commercial arm - whether Select™ licensing or Shop54 art prints. You will not be notified during the pitching process, but you will always be notified before any sale is made.

Do I get paid directly, and how does that work?

Yes. Payments are made directly by The Ruum Africa. Your contract will outline the payment terms and frequency.

What does "Managed Talent Network" actually mean for me?

It means we take care of the business side. We actively pitch our shortlisted talent to global agencies and commercial partners, ensuring you are represented accurately and professionally.

Is every featured artist automatically added to Select™ and RTM, or is there a separate vetting process?

Not all featured artists are eligible for Select™ and RTM. Eligibility is largely determined by the genre and commercial applicability of your work. Our curators assess every featured artist as part of the process.

How do I move from a Ruum Spotlight feature to the Select™ archive?

Our curators review every featured artist for technical range and commercial readiness. If your work meets the high-fidelity standards required by global agencies, it is shortlisted for the Select™ licensing arm.

What kinds of commercial projects does RTM connect artists to?

Brand campaigns, commercial shoots, editorials, and creative productions.

What happens if my submission is not approved?

Our team will reach out to offer guidance and support on how to strengthen your submission.

Can I resubmit if I'm not selected the first time?

Yes. You are welcome to submit a new story until it is approved. We encourage it.
