"Finding beauty in unlikely places is the beauty of my art."

Batsinael is an artist who tells stories through photography and visual poetry. His goal isn't just to capture moments, but to create them.

Batsinael Fekadu, Ethiopian fashion photographer

How would you describe yourself in a few sentences?

I approach photography differently from most people in the industry. I see myself more as an artist than just a photographer. This way of thinking makes me unique. I feel I have a lot to offer and don't want to be limited by any boundaries. Photography is my way of telling stories for now, but I believe there are always better ways to express and share those stories.

How did you first get into photography?

Before I became a photographer, I was a choreographer. As part of that work, we used to shoot pictures for posters and YouTube content. That's where I first started capturing photos and editing them, which eventually led me to pursue photography seriously.

What type(s) of photography do you specialise in, and why did you choose this niche?

I specialise in fashion photography. I started working with local fashion brands to learn, grow, and better understand the fashion industry. These collaborations not only helped me develop my craft but also allowed me to contribute and make a positive impact on my local fashion community.

Can you share the underlying themes or ideas that drive your photography?

Trying to find beauty in the darkest place keeps me going and challenges me.

What's the one achievement or moment in your photography career that you're most proud of?

I am very proud of the 'Ashara' project. It was an eye-opening journey that proved that a pure heart can move mountains. It brought together beautiful souls, united by one purpose: the endless search for beauty.

What's the biggest challenge you've faced as a photographer, and how did you overcome it?

Balancing the creative process with financial struggles isn't easy, but I always try to find harmony between the two because both are essential for living a meaningful life.

If you could collaborate with anyone, who would it be and why?

Christopher Maurice Brown. He's been my idol since I was a kid, so working with him would be a dream come true.

What are your thoughts on the 54Ruum platform?

54Ruum provides an excellent opportunity to discover new artists and connect unseen talent with the chance to shine. I genuinely hope this platform continues to grow and reach even greater recognition.

How's the photography and art space in your country: how has it evolved in recent years?

The photography scene has been growing, and in recent years, creatives have embraced visual expression as a means of capturing not only moments but also ideas born in their minds.

If you could give one piece of advice to someone just starting their photography journey, what would it be?

I will say: Use photography as a tool to express your creativity, because a lot of the time, the reason for wanting to get into photography is the desire to express.

Whether it's ideas, life and its offerings, or a documentation of what has lived or what a creative imagination births — photography, music, paintings, dance, or any other form of art.

Photography is just one tool to let these expressions come to life, and the focus of one starting that journey should be what and why they would like to express.
