"I weave narratives that celebrate the beauty and diversity of Fashion, with my artistic eye and passion for storytelling."

My name is Khaled Fhemy Mamah, a versatile photographer from Benin, currently based in Dakar. While my primary focus is fashion photography, I also have a passion for exploring various genres of photography. From capturing the vibrant fashion scenes of West Africa to exploring global influences, I bring my perspective to the world of fashion photography.

As a visual storyteller, my work goes beyond aesthetics, seeking to evoke emotions and spark imagination. Collaborating with talented professionals, I create visuals that showcase the fusion of style, culture, and individuality.

How would you describe yourself in a few sentences?

One of my mottos is 'Do More With Less'. I believe that creativity can compensate for the limitations we face as creatives, especially in the early stages of our careers.

How did you first become interested in photography?

It was some iPhone photos I took of my nephew and shared in a family group chat. My family was impressed with the images, and one of my siblings made a joke about me taking up photography. The joke turned into a desire to give it a try. I started with my iPhone, and here we are now.

What type(s) of photography do you specialise in, and why did you choose this niche?

“My niche is Fashion. I chose it because I am a fashion model and a fashion enthusiast.”

My work was mainly focused on beauty when I started. It still is now. However, over time, I have become more intentional in my photography to convey different messages. I am getting closer to the art world.

Can you share the underlying themes or ideas that drive your photography?

The underlying themes that drive my photography are culture (mainly African culture), societies and everything related to it. My images serve as a platform to share cultures, explore, and question societal matters.

What is the one achievement or moment in your photography career that you're most proud of?

“One milestone I can discuss is being booked for my first major commercial campaign. It was with Yango in 2024. It was my first time seeing my work all over town.”

What's the biggest challenge you've faced as a photographer, and how did you overcome it?

One of my challenges was finding a mentor to guide me through my career, not only in technical skills but also in the business aspects. I overcame this by watching tutorials on the internet (mainly YouTube).

If you could collaborate with anyone, who would it be and why?

I would like to work with Ejatu Shaw. She is one of my favourite photographers and I always watch her content on YouTube. She is inspiring and looks fun to work with.

What are your thoughts on the 54Ruum platform?

I think 54Ruum is necessary in our creative environment. I love to travel to discover what happens in different industries. With such a platform, I can get an idea of the creatives in a country, connect with the ones I like, and possibly work together.

If you could give one piece of advice to someone just starting their photography journey, what would it be?

My advice to that person would be to be patient while working his/her way to the point where he/she can make a living out of photography.
