"I connect with others through my images by leveraging colour and cinematic editing to evoke emotions."

How did you first become interested in photography?

I got into photography quite unexpectedly. A program was organised at my church, Deeper Life Bible Church in Nigeria, by the Young Professionals Forum of the church, where people could learn various crafts. I was initially considering graphics and backend design, but someone casually suggested I try photography.

I took their advice, and within six days, I had launched into a career in photography. Under the tutelage of Adebote Mayowa, I quickly developed my skills. That six-day program turned out to be a pivotal moment in my photography journey, and I didn't attend another masterclass until three years later. It's incredible how a chance suggestion can lead to a new passion, and that's exactly how I stumbled into photography.

What type(s) of photography do you specialise in, and why did you choose this niche?

While I don't strictly adhere to a single niche, I'm drawn to documentary and journalism photography, which allows me to capture stories in the moment without creative restrictions. I also specialise in concert photography, where I thrive on the energy of live performances, stage presence, and lighting. Additionally, I enjoy street photography, using my lens to narrate the stories of everyday life from unique perspectives. These genres allow me to express myself freely and bring stories to life in a dynamic way.

Can you share the underlying themes or ideas that drive your photography?

My photography is driven by passion, creativity, and a desire to tell compelling stories. I'm driven by my love for diversity, rewriting narratives, and exploring the world from unique perspectives. While financial rewards are significant, my passion for photography always takes precedence.

I connect with others through my images by leveraging colour and cinematic editing to evoke emotions. My strong writing skills also play a crucial role, allowing me to narrate the stories behind each photograph and provide context that enhances the viewer's understanding and connection to the image.

By combining powerful visuals with engaging storytelling, I aim to transport my audience into the world of my photographs and inspire them to see things from a new perspective.

What is one achievement or moment in your photography career that you're most proud of?

While I don't focus on individual achievements, several experiences stand out in my photography career. One notable highlight is my work in the gospel sector, where I brought a fresh perspective to visual storytelling for gospel artists and ministries. By creating unconventional yet spiritual images, I helped break down barriers and challenge perceptions of Christianity.

Other highlights include being invited as a TEDx speaker to discuss youth involvement in politics, which I accessed through my photography experiences. I've also volunteered to facilitate photography projects, including teaching children from slums how to tell their own stories through images.

The impact of these projects, along with the powerful images that emerged, has been significant. For me, it's about creating meaningful experiences and consistently striving for excellence in my work.

"I have some exciting photography ideas I'd love to bring to life with Nike. As for a person I'd love to photograph, it's Burna Boy. With my musical background, I'm drawn to his performances, stage presence, and branding."

What's the biggest challenge you've faced as a photographer, and how did you overcome it?

One of my biggest challenges as a photographer was not having a camera when I first started. Borrowing or renting gear was a significant struggle, and I faced impostor syndrome because I felt like I wasn't doing enough despite my efforts. I compared myself to others who seemed to be getting more recognition, and it felt like I wasn't getting the opportunities I deserved.

However, I eventually accepted that I'm a storyteller at heart, and that's what drives my photography. I realised that I didn't need a specific niche to tell stories, and that my passion and creativity could take me anywhere. By embracing this mindset, I was able to find my footing and move forward in my photography journey.

If you could collaborate with anyone, who would it be and why?

If I could collaborate with anyone, I'd love to work with Tolani Ali, a photographer known for her unconventional approach and unpredictability. Her consistency, excellence, and ability to thrive in various roles inspire me. I'd find her energy contagious and motivating, pushing me to do more and explore new opportunities. If I had to choose a brand to collaborate with, I'd pick Nike. Their strong brand personality, authenticity, and simplicity are traits I admire.

I have some exciting photography ideas I'd love to bring to life with Nike. As for a person I'd love to photograph, it's Burna Boy. With my musical background, I'm drawn to his performances, stage presence, and branding. I've had the chance to photograph him once, but I'd love another opportunity. Burna Boy is a trailblazer who pushes limits, and I find his artistry inspiring.

What are your thoughts on the 54Ruum platform?

I believe Photoruum is a trailblazer and one of a kind. As a platform centralised on Africa, it intentionally amplifies African creatives, tells African stories, and writes its narratives. Photoruum has been doing a fantastic job in this regard, and I'm thrilled to be part of this movement. I envision it driving distinctive change not just for Africa, but for the world, in the near future.
