"Creating all of my work with an iPhone has taught me to rely on creativity, perspective, and storytelling rather than equipment."

Mouhamed Seck is a Senegalese photographer whose work celebrates the beauty, emotion, and energy of everyday life. Through his photography, he shares his perspective on the world, using each image to express emotion, tell stories, and encourage viewers to see familiar moments in a new light.

Since beginning his journey in 2023 with only an iPhone, he has remained committed to creating thoughtful images that prove compelling photography is driven by vision rather than equipment.

How did you get started in photography?

Creating has always felt natural to me. I have always been drawn to the beauty, details, and stories found in everyday life. In 2023, I started taking photographs with my iPhone, focusing on ordinary moments and the small details that often go unnoticed. Photography quickly became my way of expressing myself and finding meaning in the familiar.

How would you describe yourself?

I am naturally curious and enjoy exploring new places and experiences. I like spending time outdoors, discovering interesting scenes, and capturing moments that inspire me. One thing that makes my journey unique is that I create all of my work using only my iPhone. It has taught me to rely on creativity, perspective, and storytelling rather than equipment.

What are the main themes that inspire your photography?

My photography is inspired by beauty, emotion, and the relationship between people and their surroundings. I want viewers to recognise something of themselves in my work and feel more connected to the everyday moments we often overlook. Through my images, I hope to inspire a greater appreciation for the small details that give everyday life its character.

What is the biggest challenge you've faced as a photographer?

One of my biggest challenges has been working with limited equipment. While a professional camera can be an advantage, I have built my practice using only an iPhone. That experience taught me that photography is defined not by the camera you own, but by your vision and your ability to recognise beauty in the world around you. It pushed me to develop my eye for composition, light, and storytelling, and that mindset continues to shape my work today.

What type of photography do you specialise in?

I specialise in fine art photography and creative visual storytelling. I am drawn to photography because it allows me to translate my thoughts, emotions, and perspective into visual form. My work begins with observation and imagination, and I am constantly looking for new ways to express ideas through imagery. Over time, my style has evolved through experimentation, curiosity, and consistency. Every project teaches me something new and becomes part of my creative journey.

What is your primary commercial niche?

My work is primarily focused on fine art photography, prints, and creative collaborations. I have collaborated with a gallery to produce prints for interior spaces, and I am interested in working with magazines and creative publications. I enjoy creating images that can exist both as works of art and as visual pieces that enhance commercial and cultural spaces.

"My visual approach is shaped by atmosphere, light, and emotion."

What is your unique technical or visual approach?

My visual approach is shaped by atmosphere, light, and emotion. I pay close attention to colour grading and editing, using light and separation to create depth and draw attention within each frame. I am particularly drawn to warm tones, sunlight, and natural energy, creating images that feel inviting, vibrant, and emotionally engaging.

Which global brands, photographers, or industries do you feel your work aligns with most?

My work aligns with brands and creative communities that value storytelling, culture, identity, and innovation. I admire brands such as adidas and Cactus Jack for the way they combine creativity, authenticity, and strong visual narratives. I am also inspired by photographers and visual artists who use imagery to create emotional connections and challenge conventional perspectives.

"I believe genuine storytelling builds stronger connections and leaves a lasting impression."

How's the photography and art space in Senegal?

Senegal has a vibrant and growing creative community. In recent years, I have seen more photographers, artists, and creatives gain international recognition through exhibitions, brand collaborations, and cultural projects. There is a strong culture of artistic expression, and many talented creatives are helping to showcase African creativity on the global stage.

What is one professional standard you never compromise on?

Authenticity. No matter the project, I always strive to remain true to my creative vision and create work that feels honest and meaningful. I believe genuine storytelling builds stronger connections and leaves a lasting impression.

What do you think of the 54Ruum platform?

54Ruum is an inspiring platform that celebrates talented African creatives and creates opportunities for artists to be discovered. I appreciate the way it gives visibility to diverse voices, encourages creative growth, and helps build meaningful connections across Africa's creative community. Platforms like this are important for the future of African art and culture.
